When I was eighteen in nineteen sixty six, and I took to the road as a folksinger. It was a road that doesn't exist anymore. Landing in Greenwich Village New York, the urban folk revival was in full swing. I slept on subways and park benches, I'd eat when I could, but nothing was going to stop me from doing the only thing I wanted to do. I learned how to survive on the streets, what to watch out for, and I learned the difference between women and prostitutes. That knowledge did not come easily in a neighborhood on the Lower East Side.

I was hired as the permanent opening act at the famous "Gaslight Cafe" on MacDougal Street. I played on the same bill with all the major folk stars of that era. I learned quickly by being there. When folk rock came, I was a singer that jumped right on board. I loved it, and under the name "Randy Burns and the Skydog Band" I had albums released on Mercury and Polydor Records. Playing all the best clubs in the country, receiving wonderful reviews, I came right to the brink of success. I quit the music business, breaking my contracts, and went back out on the roadagain as a folksinger. A bag over my shoulder, guitar in my hand, I was still a singer and a traveler on the disappearing road for another fourteen years after the release of my last album.
